Originally intended as export wares in the 17th and 18th centuries Batavian pieces were imported to Europe via the Dutch center of trade at Batavia (modern Jakarta), in Java. This 20th century bowl has a brown “cafe au lait” glaze on the outside and a hand painted blue and white “sweet pea” pattern on the interior.
